Navy Charges Sailor With Murder Of August Provost But Insists No Evidence Killing Was Hate Crime
A sailor has been charged in the killing of August Provost. Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Campos has been charged with sixteen counts in relation to the murder of Provost on June 30th at Camp Pendleton, California, including murder, arson, and unlawful entry. The Navy, in announcing the charges, made clear that they do not contend the murder of Provost, who was gay, was a hate crime, but that Campos killed indiscriminately. However, Provost’s Aunt Rose Roy of Beaumont, Texas, said that she was ‘not sure the charges will settle our questions about August being harassed or murdered for his sexual orientation. We are waiting for more information from the Navy.”
