Matthew Mitcham – the only diver at the 2009 FINA World Championships competing on all three boards, the one meter, three meter, and springboard – finished a disappointing and distant ninth in the three meter event, after qualifying in fifth position. Mitcham, an Olympic gold medalist, hinted that the World’s in Rome are more an extended training session that serious competition, a way for Mitcham to measure his body’s response to intense exertion, saying that Rome “was getting a feel for how to do so many events.” He said that fellow divers regard his ambitious goals as “crazy.” After the diving events conclude, Mitcham will stay in Rome to open a multi-media art exhibit inspired by the man himself, called Matt Dive Gold, created by an Italian friend.
