New Delhi, India’s highest court Thursday delivered an historic ruling, decriminalizing homosexuality and although the ruling currently only applies to the country’s capital city, the decision forces the Indian government to either appeal the ruling, which seems unlikely, or change the law for the entire country. Homosexuality has been illegal in India since 1861, a reminder, according to activists, of the country’s colonial heritage.
In the one-hundred and five page ruling, the judges wrote that “the inclusiveness that Indian society traditionally displayed, literally in every aspect of life, is manifest in recognizing a role in society for everyone. “
It is important to note that the ruling now allows HIV/AIDS education to overcome an obvious obstacle in instruction, India having one of the world’s largest populations of HIV infections.
Researchers at the University of Western Ontario, in London, contend that a HIV vaccine they discovered nearly twenty years ago will be granted approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration for a human trial to begin likely in the next two to three months.
While others might find God in the details, I find him in Neil Patrick Harris, and God, or rather Neil Patrick Harris as God has just answered a prayer, Mr. NPH currently closing a deal to host this year’s incarnation of the Emmys. If Neil comes close or even equals his performance at last month’s magnificent Tony Awards, I will be pleased, and yet knowing Mr. Harris, I think he will easily surpass and bring the Emmys much needed energy and a more obvious sense of the gay.
A less obvious example of the gay, in case you needed schooling, would be Katie Holmes, a July 23rd appearance on So You Think You Can Dance, and a tribute in dance and song to Judy Garland.
