A gay couple say their were detained Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah, by security staff from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after Matt Aune and Derek Jones engaged in a kiss on one another cheeks. According to Aune, the twosome were targeted, but the Church denies the allegation, in a written statement saying the couple were “asked to stop engaging in inappropriate behavior just as any other couple would have been. They became argumentative and used profanity and refused to leave the property. They were arrested and then given a citation for criminal trespass by the SLPD.” Aune and Jones do not dispute they were angry after being handcuffed, Aune saying he was “very pissed” and that he “unleashed a flurry of profanities.”
A protest – a kiss in – has been planned in a show of support for the couple. Participants are asked to meet at 9:00 AM at the corner of Main Street and South Temple, when and where all will engage in “gentle” displays of public affection.
Duncan James, singer for boy band Blue, reunited and about to embark on a tour, has come out, telling the News of the World that “I am bisexual. I’ve been in living relationships with men as well as women and I’m not ashamed.”
GLAAD said yesterday that Bruno not only reinforces negative stereotypes of gays, but “decreases the public’s comfort with gay people.” Jarrett Barrios, who saw the film Friday, said that Universal Pictures, which produced and is distributing Bruno, retained GLAAD as consultants, seeking advice and council, and Barrios says that the organization “shared a number of concerns, and unfortunately, the scenes that we had the biggest concerns about remained in the film.”
