According to the United States Navy, twenty-nine year old August Provost, found dead Tuesday inside a guard shack on the outer edge of Camp Pendleton, was not the victim of a hate crime and the incident will not be investigated as a crime motivated by Provost’ sexual orientation. That despite an almost unanimous choir of concern that the killing was based largely, if not solely on the fact Provost was gay from gay activists to politicians. The Navy will not, according to statements, conduct a transparent inquiry; consequently the details known are vague at best. It is known that the person of interest first taken into custody has been released, and another person of interest taken into custody, but it is not clear whether either one or both are sailors. It is also known that Provost was shot, but the Navy refuses to confirm or deny that Provost’s body had been mutilated in some way.
Fort Worth, Texas Mayor Mike Moncrief has requested federal prosecutors to conduct an independent review of the investigations being currently conducted by the Fort Worth Police Department internal affairs and the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission into the incident that occurred at the Rainbow Lounge early Sunday morning that left one patron of the gay bar in hospital with substantial injuries and another seven arrested, While Moncrief expressed an absolute faith in Chief Jeff Halstead and his ability to carry out an objective inquiry, Moncrief said that “an impartial investigation” is an obligation to the citizens of Fort Worth, but would not explain further.
