The Canadian Conservative government, under the guise of the Ministry of Tourism, has rejected funding for Montreal’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered annual cultural festival Diverse/Cite that despite assurances that the organization easily qualified for funding under the guidelines set out by the Marquee Tourism Events Program. Diverse/Cite had requested one-hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars in funding. The MTEP is an invention of the Stephen Harper led Conservatives, meant to insure that political inventions not occur similar to one experienced by the Liberal party under their run sponsorship program. The portfolio was recently removed from Diane Ablonzy and awarded to Tony Clement after Ablonzy was criticized by members of her caucus for funding the Toronto Gay Pride Festival, including lunatic fringe right wing MP Brad Trost, of Saskatchewan.
Rupert Everett says that it is lucky Michael Jackson died when he did, stating “I think it was fortuitous that he died.” Everett also argues that Jackson, in life and death, is a lesson in the excesses of celebrity, adding that Michael “was a freak. He looked like a character from Shrek.”
While not opening until March 5th, 2010, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is one of the most buzzed about movies, and a new teaser trailer has just been released, certain to add to the interest. The film stars the wondrous Mia Wasikowska, who was so great in the first season of HBO’s In Treatment, as well as Burton stalwarts Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and Anne Hathaway.
