Late Thursday, a United States district judge removed the state of California as a defendant in a pending lawsuit that challenges the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that prevents the American government from recognizing gay marriages. The judge ruled that California can no longer be considered a valid defendant because the suit is being brought by a couple, residents of the state, who married there before a voter amendment passed banning same-sex marriages in the state.
New details from the Fort Worth Police Department report on the events surrounding the inspection of the Rainbow Lounge made in the early hours of Sunday, June 28th, the document reading dramatically different from previous accounts, including details of the bar patrons, both female and male, seemingly sexually harassing the police and agents from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission. The report, written by officers, reads a lot like fiction, and suggests a situation the authorities allowed to quite quickly turn chaotic. What is not made clear in any of the reports is why the Rainbow Lounge attracted the attention of either agency.
