Obama Administration Argues That Defense Of Marriage Act Is Economically Viable, Adam Lambert Forced To Concede A Bi-Curiosity, Simon Rex Returns

President Obama, despite a campaign pledge that now obviously must be seen as political pandering by the then candidate Obama, is not now nor likely ever to be a fierce advocate for gay men and women in the United States. The Obama Administration continues to frustrate and by extension frighten the gay community with refutations to laws that need be changed and refusals to offer lucid explanations as to how and why it can defend indefensible policy, like the Defense of Marriage Act and DADT. The latest misstep by the once certain Administration is their insistence that a court in Santa Ana, California dismiss a case filed by a couple who married in the window between the state Supreme Court’s ruling of May, 2008, that found the ban on gay marriage unconstitutional and November 4th, 2008, when a majority of voters overturned the Court’s ruling, and passed Proposition 8. The couple, Christopher Hammer and Arthur Smelt, argues that the federal law which is the Defense of Marriage Act in fact violates their right to due process guaranteed by the constitution and that their marriage should be recognized in all fifty states. The Administration argues that the Defense of Marriage Act protects the autonomy of the state to define marriage while acting in an economically efficient manner, a statement the Administration contends is rational.

Adam Lambert’s interview on Friday night on ABC’s 20/20 was cute, but boy did it end in the most awkward of ways, leading credence to corporate conspiracy theorists. Towards the close of otherwise non-investigative piece – where nothing new was really revealed save Lambert’s American Idol set on the soon to begin Idol tour will include a number of vintage David Bowie songs – Lambert is asked about the rather rabid female following he enjoys, and whether he would he considers himself to be bisexual? He answered no, but with puny prodding, suggested that he might be “bi-curious.” The only reason I bring this up is because the idea that a pop singer who has come out in the most public of ways need to have his sexuality softened, made palatable for everyone and anyone, seems to dovetail with the resistance of President Obama to even acknowledge that gay men and women exist, let alone merit equal rights
