Late Monday, amid chaos and confusion, the Republican Party took control of the New York State Senate, two despicable and dissonant Democrats – Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens – who had been brokering a deal for at least a month, crossed the floor and joined the thirty Republicans, thereby restoring that Party’s control of Albany, and with it, and perhaps most importantly, the fate of a gay marriage bill that only last week had been almost guaranteed to pass.
The two – both of whom fall well far of possessing any ethical code; Espanda was fined for not disclosing campaign contributions and is facing a grand jury indictment for his involvement in a non-profit health care network, while Monserrate was convicted earlier this year on felony charges for stabbing a companion with broken glass – said they will continue to act as members of the Democratic Party while working with the Republicans to control the legislature. It is not exactly surprising, since the Empire State has been a model of political anarchy as of late, having had a total of three Governors in less than three years. The story, as I am sure you might imagine, is still developing.
