Gavin Newsome Calls Defense Of Marriage Act Big Mistake, Tony Kushner, Ryan Reynolds’ Abs, Photo Of Chaz Bono’s Girlfriend, Michael Phelps Pretty

Both Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome – each of whom are presumptive Democratic candidates for Governor of California - in Los Angeles for that city’s Pride festivities, came out critical of a new United States Justice Department memo released this past Friday that took an awkward stance attempting to defend the Defense of Marriage Act. According to the Los Angeles Times, Newsome called the Justice memo a “big mistake” while Villaraigosa expressed concerns “about some of the arguments being made.” That memo tried, unsuccessfully, to equate good economics with the Act, arguing that it fact preserved state finances.

The New York Times reports on Tony Kushner’s new play, The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism With a Key to the Scriptures, with a running time – nearly four hours – to match it’s rather lengthy title and finds that the work is one still in progress.

The New York Post, meanwhile, via Page Six, reports that the “largely gay audience of male assistants” attending last week’s screening of The Proposal gave Golden Girl Betty White a standing ovation pre-film and an audible collective “sigh” for Ryan Reynolds when he appeared, mid-film, in tiny towel. It all sounds like a scene from a bathhouse.

TMZ has the first pictures of Jennifer, Chaz Bono’s longtime girlfriend, and as an aside, the Ed Hardy thing, it really need be stopped, now! Please!

More Michael Phelps, rehabilitated and resurgent, with fabulous facial hair that manages to mimic one Mr. Mark Spitz’s look circa the seventies, swimming in Sunday’s Santa Clara International Invitational,
