Despite Opposition On All Sides Alberta Passes Bill 44, New York Senator Thomas Duane Says Gay Marriage Done Deal, Dick Cheney Hearts Gays, Sort Of

After an exhaustive debate, the Alberta Legislature early Tuesday morning passed in law the confused and controversial Bill 44 that will finally, years after the fact, offer protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation, but will also allow parents to exercise a provision where they can remove children from classes whose curriculum would teach sexual orientation. Complaints that the two ideas are obviously two separate bills went, not surprisingly, unheard by the members of the provincial government, all of whom apparently remain unaware that the Human Rights Act and School Act are in fact two different and distinct political entities.

In New York on Monday, Senator Thomas Duane says he has been assured by at least thirty-two senators that they will vote to approve a bill Duane sponsored to legalize gay marriage in the Empire State. Duane is the main sponsor of the legislation.

Dick Cheney Monday, speaking to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on the now never ending Dick Cheney spring tour, said that he was in favor of gay marriage, saying with a certain awkward articulation, “I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone.” He added that the issue was best dealt with at the state level instead of a federal ruling, and then spent most of the remaining time defended his and former President George W. Bush and their wartime policies. All this talking, of course, makes me worry that Dick has seen the future and it is him making a run for the office of president in 2012. Shudder.
