Conservative religious leaders in Washington State Monday carried out a threat to file a referendum to overturn that state’s recent passage of Bill 5688, a Senate legislative act that effectively extends all state benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples to homosexual couples, but stopped short of legalizing gay marriage. The unusual suspects – Catholics, Mormons, and Protestants – have formed a coalition to gain enough signatures to see a referendum placed on the November, 2009 ballot, to repeal the law, however the campaign itself is already seen as less than united, with some religious leaders insisting the timing of the move is all wrong, given Washington state, and by extension, America’s economic crisis. According to Reverend Joe Fuiten, who opposes gay marriage, but said he cannot support the campaign to overturn the legislation, there is “a pretty strong consensus not to run this campaign … people are more focused on economic issues at this time.”
The British Home Office Tuesday took the unusual step of releasing the names of sixteen individuals that have been banned from entering the country since last fall, for “fostering extremism” that the country will not tolerate. Among those named, Westboro Baptist hate mongers Fred and Shirley Phelps, and American talk show oddity Michael Savage – whose real name is Michael Weiner – who join two members of a radical Russian skinhead gang, and an ex-Nazi.
The 2009 Tony Award Nominations were announced Tuesday morning in New York City, with the musical Billy Elliot receiving fifteen nominations, the most for any production, and tying The Producers for that record. Next To Normal earned eleven nominations, and the revival of Hair earned eight. Great news for [title of the show] as it received a nomination, along with Billy Elliot, for best book of a musical, and for Liza Minnelli, whose Liza’s at the Palace was nominated for best special theatrical event. Among those earning acting nominations were Gavin Creel for Hair, Jane Fonda for 33 Variations, and Raul Esparaza for Speed-the-Plow, and all four leads of Gods of Carnage – Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini, and Marcia Gay Harden. The Tony Awards ceremony is June 7th and it will be broadcast live on CBS.
