A day after Maine Democratic Governor surprisingly signed into law a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in that state, New Hampshire Governor, Democrat John Lynch, who previously indicated he would veto that state’s passed gay marriage bill without hesitation, now says he will make “the best decision” he can for the people of New Hampshire. Lynch, who believes the word marriage itself should be reserved for opposite sex couples, may be influenced by the sudden confluence of New England states passing legislation affording gay men and women the right to marry.
Not surprisingly, Maine election officials Thursday said that a formal challenge to the state’s just passed gay marriage law has been filed employing the state constitution’s “peoples veto” provision.
Why is President Obama still so silent on gay marriage despite the recent and rapid changes occurring in the United States almost daily? Is it that his ambivalent posturing on gay rights has placed in an awkward position where he now risks alienating potential supporters if he is seen to either fulfill his campaign promise to be a “fierce advocate” for gays or if he continues to oppose gay marriage? Either way, there is growing grumblings from both sides that the President needs to be seen assuming some sort of leadership.
Which state will follow the lead set by Vermont, Iowa, and Maine to legalize gay marriage? Some see New Jersey, while others look way out west to Washington.
