Shirley Tan Granted Temporary Deportation Delay, Gunman Shoots Takes Hostages At Immigration Center, Madonna Without Mercy, White Party

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Shirley Tan has been given a two month temporary reprieve from a deportation order that was to take effect Friday, and is now able to appeal the decision made by the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who, following protocol spelt out in the Defense of Marriage Act, do not, under any circumstances, consider domestic partnerships (or even legal same-sex marriage, available in Massachusetts and Connecticut) valid grounds for immigration. Tan, whom is partnered and is raising two twin boys in San Mateo, California, was aided in the stay of deportation by Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California and Democratic Representative Jackie Speier of San Mateo. The San Francisco Chronicle underlines how inherently unfair the current immigration laws are, and how related to they are to the need for a federal reform of gay marriage in America, not a state by state patchwork of same-sex equal rights.

A still developing situation in Binghamton, New York, where a gunman has taken over an immigration and naturalization center, shooting at least four individuals and taking at least forty hostages, but police are on scene and have evacuated the area.

Not surprisingly, the Malawi Court ruled that Madonna can not go ahead with the planned adoption of Mercy, a soon to be four-year old girl from the area, the Court citing a rule that requires prospective parents reside in Malawi for a period of time prior to adoption. Madonna intends to appeal.

The 20th annual Jeffrey Sanker hosted White Party is next weekend, in Palm Springs, California, where last year’s third line performer Lady GaGa will host, and the Los Angeles Times offers a look back and forward.
